SURROUNDINGS SERIES - Hematite Fe₂O₃
Series Intro:
The Surroundings series captures memorable colors during my travels to isolated locations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pyramid forms of resin are used to explore color and light at varying thicknesses as a material study.

About Hematite Fe₂O₃:
Our month-long stay in the Capitol Reef National Park region of Southern Utah consumed us with the landscapes of dramatic rock formations that told a visceral story of the earth’s physical creation and transformation across eras.

The pronounced red hues of Navajo Sandstone formations were especially captivating as they felt almost Martian. The colors, resulting from iron oxide (the mineral hematite; a.k.a. rust) deposits dating back to the Early-Jurassic period, manifest themselves in everything from the pink sand dunes to the gradients of red and orange of solid sandstone formations. This pyramid reflects that otherworldly sentiment, and captures the full range of hues through the gradient of its tapering form.
The photographs of these pieces have become as important as the pieces themselves.

I knew I wanted to shoot in this spot from a hike early in our stay. "Gorilla Rock" or "Lion’s Head" (I guess depending on the direction of your imagination or the map you read) is down a 25 minute spur from the Great Western Trail. It’s an outcropping of rounded sandstone formations with endless nooks and crannies to explore.

On the second to last day of our stay I returned, carrying the 15 pound pyramid carefully wrapped in a backpack, along with another 15 pounds of camera gear. I was quickly sweating profusely despite the 30 degree weather.

Given the terrain, direct light and shadows would change minute by minute in the low-angle winter sun. Trudging through the sand I saw this low cove, sunbeam piercing through an opening. I placed the pyramid right in its path, quickly snapping a few shots laying on my chest. As I went to adjust the angle of the piece and returned to my camera, the light slipped away. Always good to remember “something" is better than "perfect,” as "perfect" may never exist.
